How Progressive Income Tax Brackets Work

Understanding Marginal Tax Rates

Income tax in most countries uses a progressive bracket system. Each portion of your income is taxed at a different rate. Only the income within each bracket is subject to that bracket's rate, not your entire income.

FAQ

Does moving into a higher bracket tax ALL my income at the higher rate?

No. This is one of the most common tax misconceptions. Only the amount that exceeds the bracket threshold is taxed at the higher rate. Your effective tax rate is always lower than your marginal rate.

Example with 40,000 EUR (France):

  • First 11,294 EUR at 0% = 0 EUR
  • Next 17,503 EUR at 11% = 1,925 EUR
  • Remaining 11,203 EUR at 30% = 3,361 EUR
  • Total tax: approximately 5,286 EUR
  • Effective rate: 13.2% (vs marginal rate of 30%)
